Diaper rash is a common form of inflamed skin (dermatitis) typically affecting the area covered by a diaper. It is often related to prolonged exposure to wetness, irritation from urine and feces, and friction. On children with darker skin tones, the inflammation might look purple or gray or may appear as a darker shade than unaffected areas. On lighter skin tones diaper rash can appear as a patchwork of bright red skin. The rash usually isn't serious and can be treated with simple at-home remedies. Keeping your baby's skin as dry as possible and allowing the area to breathe can help prevent diaper rash.
